The name ALADIN presented obvious visual options; the old logo for the system was, in fact, Aladdin's lamp. Because ALADIN is already widely used and widely recognized, we decided to maintain the theme of Aladdin's lamp when designing a new identity for the system. However, the ALADIN logo needed to represent fluid information delivery more so than the Arabian tale.
We created a shape to meet both goals abstractly, using a combination of flowing curves and a negative shape reminiscent of the handle of Aladdin's lamp. Similar colors were used on both elements of the logo to highlight the negative shape. For type, we chose the Futura font for its sharp modern letterforms and because it was a good Web-appropriate complement to the dynamic logo shape.
To further reinforce the idea that the negative space in the logo is intended to suggest Aladdin's lamp, we decided to always present the logo against a white background so the interior space would always be the brightest part of the design. The orange and yellow tones of the logo also help viewers make subtle connections to Aladdin's lamp.
