The ALADIN user interface required a careful combination of technical and design considerations. Visual consistency was a primary concern, as the Web site contents varied considerably for each member library in the consortium. Additionally, every design element had to be largely self-standing, as each had to be separately integrated into an existing template system. We replaced text with Web-optimized images where appropriate to provide visual variety without significantly increasing server load.
To give the site more of a collegiate feel, we used bold blocks of color -- deep blues and greens with bright orange and yellow accenting. The color scheme was also designed to be high-contrast and maximize readability for this content-rich site. Solid color blocks help modularize elements within each page, and rounded-off corners for blocks of information give a finished, integrated look to the system. Complementary hues activate each page and separate clickable from static items.
