About the WRLC Identity

The WRLC logo presented the considerable design challenge of negotiating the formality of a higher education group with the speed and fluidity of modern data delivery.

We chose an equilateral triangle -- the strongest, most solid geometric shape -- to represent the unified core of central services the WRLC provides its member libraries. The well-defined geometric space also suggests the important role the WRLC plays within a defined geographic region (the Washington area). The points of the triangle suggest the consortium's purpose of unifying multiple information sources.

A road, created with negative space, traverses the triangle left to right, evoking not only a stream of information but also a sense of space and direction. The type treatment of the letters "WRLC" follows accordingly with an appropriate oblique sans-serif font based originally on MS Trebuchet. Using the right shapes, and right type, we created a logo that is dynamic and modern, but still classic and formal.
